Cambridge International General Certificate
in Secondary Education

Physically Active Youth and the Combretum Educational Trust (CET) are piloting a one year collaboration with the support of Rand Merchant Bank the purpose of which is to remove some of the financial barriers the youth from disadvantaged backgrounds face in accessing high quality educational opportunities. A total of eight young Namibians are offered a chance to strengthen their academic foundations in Senior Secondary, Pre-tertiary and Higher Level courses before proceeding to sit the Cambridge International General Certificate in Secondary Education. Following the exams, the learners are expected to gain access to the rigours of tertiary level education. The project began in November 2016 when during one month intense preparation the programme instilled in the learners values of honesty, competence and the concept of lifelong learning thus paving the way for a full year foundational programme in 2017.
P.A.Y. identified suitable candidates from our afternoon school intervention programmes and is providing transport support and nutrition whereas Combretum Education Trust implements the programmes at the CET school. Joint oversight and monitoring and evaluation was established and managements of both organisations are continuously assessing the pilot. So far, the collaboration has proved extremely successful in minimising barriers to high quality education for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.
